VW Raises the Hot Hatch Bar (2010 VW .:R20)

vw-mkvi-gti-01s

The unveiling of the next generation GTI was somewhat disappointing. The Mk VI only had a 10hp gain over the Mk V, and performed at almost identically. As such,  slightly over-enthusiastic lovers of ze people’s car, people like us, were rather let down. I was hoping for 240 hp out of the new GTI, not 210. If one wanted a hot hatch with more power, one had to hunt down a rare .:R32, which had a 3.2l 250hp V6 under the bonnet and AWD. The problem with the .:R32, other than the fact that there are virtually none in North America, is that is isn’t really much faster than a normal GTI on account of weight. The .:R32 also drank a lot more gas, and was known to have more engine problems than the GTI. Not a terribly good deal in my opinion. In 2010 though, VW is giving us the car we all want. Find out how after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Because What a ‘Vette Needs is More Power (Hennessey ZR1)

hennesseyzr1

Because the 3.4 second 0-60 and 205 mph top speed of the Corvette ZR1 is far too slow, Hennessey has brought the engine up from “crazy” to “ludicrous.” The 638 hp 6.2l LS9 engine has been tuned to provide a full 705 horses. The lunatics at Hennessey have added a new supercharger pulley, increasing the system’s psi by three, as well as replacing some other small parts with higher performing versions of their own. Hit the jump for Hennessey’s future plans. Read the rest of this entry »

Video: Hyundai Takes Gloves Off For Superbowl (Genesis Sedan and Genesis Coupe)

Here’s a sneak peak at a couple of the Hyundai commercials that will be aired during the Superbowl this Sunday. Hyundai, Audi, and Toyota will be the only auto manufacturers to display ads during the notoriously expensive Superbowl airing. Hyundai is focusing on their new Assurance program, the new Mustang-fighting Genesis Coupe, and the garnering of the North American Car of the Year award for the Genesis sedan. To my eye, the Genesis Coupe commercial is easily the best, with the Angry Bosses commercial in a close second. The commercials advertising the Assurance program damn near put me to sleep, but I suppose that in these trying economic times, that’s what people want to hear. Me, I just want to see powerslides and drifting. Enter Genesis Coupe. More Hyundai Superbowl action after the jump.

Will We Drive Diesel Cars?

duramax_diesel_emblem_hummer_h1_alpha_06

Diesel engines have been around for decades and in certain applications, they rule. Transport trucks, farm equipment and large boats all rely on diesel power for effective propulsion. Why hasn’t this been the case with cars and light trucks? Diesel cars have been available in Europe or some time, in fact 60% of the new vehicles sold in Europe are diesel powered. This has not been the case in North America, where we have enjoyed substantially lower fuel costs.

Which Shade of Green Will We Drive?

200920lamborghini20gallardo204

During 2008, North American motorists discovered an international reality that we had been held safe from for over thirty years. Gasoline costs money. Rising fuel costs actually impacted North American motorists and we flooded the dealerships searching for vehicles that were more economical to operate.

The result of this panic was an endless supply of SUV’s for a fraction of their apparent value. No one would buy them new or used, at any price. By summer, automakers and dealers had become overstocked with large luxo-barges as consumers opted for more fuel-efficient vehicles. Hybrid sales boomed, as did sales of smaller cars and lighter trucks. We were all singing the praises of the new generation of green vehicles (not the Verde Ithaca green of the LP560 above, mind you) and we began to purchase these regardless of the premium they commanded over their less green alternatives. Then, something odd happened, fuel prices fell about 15%, then 50%. With this perhaps temporary adjustment in fuel pricing, our interest in the new Eco-Box automobiles subsided.

This raises an interesting question. Which shade of green are we really interested in; the green in our wallets or the green in our environment?
