What To Buy… What To Buy?

One of my very good friends is in the enviable position of looking for a new car. The budget? Large. Like fifty-five thousand large. He doesn’t care whether it seats two or four, has two doors or four, or whether its FWD, RWD, or AWD. He just wants a car that’s classy and fast with a good amount of warranty left. Oh, and the purchase will be made in the spring, so we can count on a little more depreciation between now and then. And the car will be purchased used to avoid annoyances like GST.

So of course I took it upon myself to brainstorm suggestions. After thinking that a 2007/2008 335i coupe would be ideal, I decided to confer with my personal list of dream cars, just in case one of them popped out at me. Sure enough, the Audi RS4 was on the list, causing my neural synapses to fire exuberantly with eureka. Why hadn’t I thought of it before? A 2007 model with 30,000-40,000km is very doable with his price range. It has AWD for our Canadian winters, a 4.2L V8 that revs to over 8,000 rpm and makes 420 hp, and it has just a hair of sleeper appeal. Oh, and those flared wheel arches! Just glorious. So that’s my pick and I’m sticking to it.

What would you suggest? C’mon, help a brother out.

Da Streetz: De Tomaso Pantera

IMG_0409

The streets (or streetz) of Edmonton are rarely littered with anything of interest for car aficionados. But every now and again, something will snap your head and make you take notice. An early July day this past summer was just such a day when I came across the bastard love child of Italian coachwork and American muscle in a neighbourhood garage – the De Tomaso Pantera. Welcome to another episode of Da StreetzRead the rest of this entry »

Canada Home to World’s Worst Parker

UPDATE: Hyundai Canada has provided Todd Jamison, one of the victims, with a brand new Elantra [AutoNorth]

This is quite possibly the worst parking job ever, and the reason why people think BMW drivers are asshats, especially X5 drivers. The worst part, aside from making Canadians look bad, is that after the disaster, she took the time to consider her options, and then ran away. She has been found and will appear in court in December.

US VP Biden Outs Fisker’s Future

461546.1-lg

What to call that shade of blue... What to call it...

The US electric-car-of-complete-awesomeness race is officially ON. Tesla’s told us about their plans for the future, and their visions of affordable electrics for the masses. Fisker hadn’t taken that step yet, and it’s not certain when they were planning to—but none of that matters now, because someone’s spilled the beans. Follow the jump for more. How Hard Can It Be? Ferrari Daytona Spyder Replica

Ferrari Daytona Spyder Ferrari Daytona Spyder

For many years there have been wonderful recreations of exceptional Ferraris. We’re not talking about the Mera, an ill-proportioned Ferrari 308 built upon a Pontiac Fiero. Nor are we talking about the Puma, something that bore absolutely no resemblance to a Ferrari 246 Dino. No, we’re talking the upper echelon.

While not the absolute cream of the Cavallino Rampante crop, the McBurnie Spyder recreated the feel of a 365 GTS/4 Daytona in style, if not absolute substance. Nobody will ever forget the first episode of “Miami Vice” featuring Crockett and Tubbs rolling through deepest darkest Miami serenaded by Phil Collins’ “In The Air Tonight.”

Just the thought gives me chills and makes me want a snootful of blow. And speaking of, welcome to How Hard Can It Be? Read the rest of this entry »

New 2010 VW Golf and GTI Configurators Are Up

golf-config copy

Go waste an hour or two configuring ze people’s hatch! I say the GTI looks best in black (brings out the red details on the grill) and the Golf in Blue Graphite. Not to say that the red GTI isn’t pretty too. What say you? Check out the GTI here and the Golf here.

CarEnvy’s Mark Atkinson is the 2nd Best Writer in Canada!

marka

No, I’m not the best, but thank you for asking.

Our very own Mark Atkinson (on left), who has only been writing sparsely of late because he is a new father, came in first runner-up in the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) Journalist of the Year competition. The winner was Russell Purcell, but since Russell doesn’t write for us, that makes Mark’s contributions to CarEnvy all the more valuable.

Click here to enjoy the best that Mark Atksinon has to offer Canadian car enthusiasts! Congratulations to Mark and may he win next year.

GM’s Cadillac CTS-V Challenge at Monticello

500x_Group-2-results

In case you’ve been living in the dark for the last few weeks, GM has been pumping up its Cadillac CTS-V Challenge at Monticello Raceway just outside New York City. The “May The Best Car Win” campaign is spearheaded by none other than Maximum Bob Lutz, who will be behind the wheel of a CTS-V. Challengers from across the (American) blogosphere were challenged to bring their fastest 4-door production sedans to go head-to-head with the CTS-V. Jalopnik brought a Mitsu Evo X, TTAC/SSL’s Jack Baruth used a CTS-V because he couldn’t get anything else, and there’s also an M3 and a RS4, but an auspicious lack of Porsche Panameras.

Well today is the day. So follow all the action on something called Tweeter, or something. Click here to follow it live.

Anything under 3 minutes is quite strong on the wet and twisty track. So far, the best time I’ve seen is 2:48 by some guy named Aron L. in the CTS-V.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the layout of the track, follow below to see a map of Monticello. Read the rest of this entry »

Porsche Spreads Legs for 2012

27109944035501600x1060

Porsche zealots aren’t gonna like this bit of news. Not one bit. Autocar UK is reporting that over the next 3-4 years, Porsche is going to introduce a host of new engines and new models. Looks like the Panamera four-door is just the beginning of a product diversification so broad that even BMW would be proud.

Follow the jump to take a peek up the skirt of the Stuttgart whore. Read the rest of this entry »
