VW Jetta TDI Cup Street to Arrive in January

We’ll see if the North American market is ready to handle the idea of a sporty diesel in January, when the first VW Jetta TDI Cup Street Editions hit the showroom floors. However, we aren’t getting the GTD because there’s no way in hell this market could accept a diesel sports hatchback. The TDI Cup is essentially a GLI with a torquetastic diesel engine. It has the same brakes, the same suspension, and the same plaid seats, but is also has a diesel engine that puts out 140 horses. At first glance, people will see 140 horsepower and be disappointed, but know that this engine also produces an impressive 236 ft-lbs of torque. If you ask me, a fuel efficient car with great handling, a heap of torque, plenty of practicality, and no maintenance costs for three years sounds brilliant, but we’ll just have to wait and see if anybody is still paying attention after “diesel.”

You know all of those car enthusiasts who always bemoan the lack of diesel cars, the lack of sporty cars, the lack of small cars? How every time the men in suits aren't sure of whether or not to give us NA enthusiasts a taste, they're the ones who clamor about how much they'd love to own one and would buy one in a heartbeat and how said men in suits are morons for excluding us?
Well, this is your chance, people. It's your God-given duty to snap up as many of these as possible. We better start encouraging these suits that we'll put our money where our mouths are.

You're absolutely right. The only hang-up is that people who clamour for fast, sporting, little diesel cars are the same people who haven't bought a new year in… ever. These people are more likely to buy a '98 miata or a Datsun 510 or race in LeMons than pay $35k for a new car.
