F1 News: He’s Baaaaack!

What was only strongly hinted at last week has now become a reality. Michael Schumacher will be driving alongside Nico Rosberg for Mercedes GP for the 2010 season. It has officially been confirmed. The song in the video above may still be applicable, though someone’s clearly going to have to do a new edit of the visual elements. Follow the jump for more.

The contract, as it stands, only runs the course of the 2010 F1 season. It will allegedly see Schumi getting paid £6.2 million. After that, no one’s saying for sure.

In other Mercedes GP-related news, they’ve signed on a new major title sponsor for 2010 in Petronas. Yes, you read that correctly. That means Mercedes GP has effectively shunted Sauber to the side, despite years of high-level involvement with the team’s every move. This also means they’re casting aside fellow countrymen Proton Lotus F1 in favour of presumably greener pastures. While Lotus has signed Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen to pilot its first year back in the game, signs are looking increasingly grim for the team’s sustainability as it struggles to find sponsors and funding. But hey, if Brawn can do it, so can Lotus.

What will happen next? Will some staggering new development be announced on Christmas Day (in the morning)? Wait and see, that’s all we can do.
