After a rather worrying start to the Hungaroring weekend for the Formula One paddock, Lewis Hamilton managed to stage a stunning upset in winning his first race this year. Unfortunately, celebration of such a fantastic victory was somewhat muted due to Felipe Massa’s accident. More below.
Felipe Massa was seriously injured during Q2 at Hungaroring earlier today when a spring flew off of the rear suspension of Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn GP car and through Massa’s visor, hitting him hard on the head as he tore through one of Hungaroring’s fastest sections at around 175 MPH. Afterward, he was airlifted to AEK Hospital in Budapest, where he underwent surgery to remove a piece of damaged bone from his eye socket. Ferrari’s latest press release states that he’s currently in intensive care, but is expected to make a full recovery. Unfortunately, this does mean that he won’t be participating in the Hungarian GP tomorrow—but it’s a comparatively small price to pay for a full and speedy recovery.
